How to Plan For An Outdoor Wedding Dessert Table

Wedding reception at STG Ipoh

We are setting up an outdoor wedding dessert table at STG, Teahouse in Ipoh which is a 2-storey bungalow cafe with a well-maintained garden and its own parking space. One does not need to worry about parking when in Ipoh. Located at a high-end colonial residential area close to Ipoh town but is secluded from the main road.

Outdoor weddings has the advantage of a picturesque natural environment and sunlight favourable for photography. Early mornings are the favourites with the fresh cool air of dawn and moderate amount of sun. Evenings are also attractive with lighting gradually leading from dusk to twilight.

Pros and Cons of an Outdoor Wedding Dessert Table

There are additional concerns to keep in mind while preparing for an outdoor dessert table. Take advantage of the good photos you will get and prepare desserts using ingredients of bright cheerful colours. Be aware of the desserts that can’t take the outdoor heat. Modify their recipes or change their presentation. Be creative and flexible.

3 Concerns of an Outdoor Dessert Table

I. Table Setup

A fully clothed table with skirting and crumpled runners. Placement of the 3-tier stand as centrepiece, white plates, board, acrylic riser, photos in frames, and decorative flowers in vases, among other ornaments.

Table setup includes:

  • size of the table
  • the centrepiece
  • types of fabrics, flowers and their colours
  • decorative items and their placements
  • types of stands and crockeries

The theme here is Dessert Bar + Photo Display Table by Blush Weddings & Events.

Working closely with wedding planner and decorator is essential to create a table setup complementing the theme.

II. Types of Dessert Items

Dessert items need to withstand the eventual rising temperature as the morning progresses. My recipes have been modified to suit our tropical weather. After two events where the cheese cake melted, it is now able to retain its shape even if kept in a parked car under the sun.

Clients get to choose 6 types of desserts from the menu. Cupcakes, cheese cakes, panna cotta, madeleine, brownies and cookie mendiants.

III. Designing the Desserts

Each wedding has a different theme. Examples of theme are

  • Colour theme – this setup is according to the colour theme of pastel pink, blue and purple
  • Theme based on tradition and culture – Chinese Traditional Theme by Blush Weddings and Events
  • Stylized theme – examples are cartoon character theme, boho, rustic, fairytale, etc.

My USP (unique selling point) is for each dessert table to have its own unique and customised look. No wedding is the same. The desserts themselves are also customised to the theme and couple as much as possible, but of course there are limitations, not every dessert has the same flexibility. For example the Banana Strawberry Crumble Brownie is too famous for its look to be altered.

Introducing A Takeaway Box

Dessert Takeaway Box

A takeaway box holding 2 pieces of each dessert type is newly implemented. Wedding couples are always saying they didn’t get to try the desserts or even have a look at them due to the schedule. This takeaway box lets them experience the combination of desserts specially created for their wedding day.
