An Unexpected Glam At A School Hall Wedding Venue
Welcome to SJKC Khiu Min, Kuala Kangsar. A Chinese school where you can rent the school hall as a wedding venue for lunch or dinner receptions. Located an hour from Ipoh city, Kuala Kangsar is the hometown of the groom, Linggamm. This is the second wedding reception for Linggamm and his bride, Jommy from Thailand. Therefore, they know what they wanted when we first met for consulatation. Which is a show stopping wedding cake and desserts to complement it.
The Unassuming School Hall
With my limited vocabulary in architecture, I can only describe the hall as a huge metal structure that looks like an airplane parking enclosure. It is an open space hall which doubles as a basketball court and badminton court, which explains the high ceiling. Hats off to the decorating team. A hugh effort needed to transform the hall by covering up the stage and the internal perimeter in white fabric.

The Cake and Dessert Table Setup
The cake table is a 5-feet round table. We were debating whether the table should be on stage or below stage. Looking at the size of the hall, on stage is the better choice. It is just that the portioning of the cake for serving would be below stage and the desserts will be moved together as well.

The cake comprises of three separate cakes. A 2-tier dummy, a 3 tier bottom real cake, and a 4 tier bottom real cake. They are on a Wilton cake stand. Linggamm chooses the stand while Jommy decides the cake designs. A wide range of decorating techniques are used following the theme color green and white. The flowers are from wafer paper, gumpaste and fresh Amaranthus. The front 4-tier cake incorporates elements of Jommy’s Chut Thai (traditional Thai dress).

The six types of desserts chosen are those sturdy types because of the open hall, therefore no air-conditioning to keep desserts cool. Air coolers are available on stage and the night time temperature helps.

Other vendors for the night includes photobooth, snack stalls, emcee, musician and the caterer providing delicious Briyani buffet.

Conclusion
The biggest advantage of having a school hall wedding venue (specifically SMJK Khiu Min) as a wedding reception is the vast empty space for fireworks photography.
To have fireworks for wedding you need to have an open area. Therefore it is rare, and this photo is precious!
