Cake Fail: Wrong Name On The Wedding Cake😭

We are all too familiar with wedding cake fails on the internet. Funny reels and photos on leaning Tower of Pisa cakes, toppling cakes, melting cakes, ugly cakes…etc. My fair share of falling cakes has exceeded the number of fingers in one hand. Internet pictures of cakes with wrong names or wrong wordings are more exposed. I had my first wrong name on a 5-tier wedding cake…at Yuk Sou Hin, Weil Hotel. Another feather to my 15 years of making cakes. And the person that spotted the mistake was none other than my client, the Bride. I’m embarrassed but feeling lucky at the same time. Embarrassed that the cake was already setup at venue, lucky that it was spotted 2 hours before dinner starts.

The Mistake

Although the mistake was rectified in 5 minutes, I had to make a trip back to get my tools. In future, no more trying to surprise the couple, two pairs of eyes are better than one, so send the cake photo once the cake is done, before delivery. Overconfidence and familiarity with venue I thought there was nothing I couldn’t handle since I’ll be staying throughout and doing the portioning as well, in the end there really is something for me to handle, haha!

My decision to stick to fondant for covering cakes has also to do with too many misadventures caused by navigating road bumps, sharp turns and slopes during delivery. Weather condition also plays a part. Once my wafer paper flowers melted when setup before sunrise. It was a wet week and the outdoor setting attracted dew to the cake, by 10am the wafer paper Magnolias “wilted” although it was sunny. I assume they turned soft and harden again as the sun rises. We learn as we go.

At Yuk Sou Hin Restaurant

Congratulations Eunice and Carlson! Reception at Yuk Sou Hin Restaurant, Weil Hotel, with delicious and well presented food, paired with professional and attentive service. Another highlight of the restaurant is the colourful carpet, makes all photos look great!

Cake Details

The wedding cake is designed with the input of ideas from Eunice and Carlson. The Hermès orange and sunflowers are bright additions to the traditional Chinese red. The style of surnames incorporated into the double happiness 囍 character, I foresee this to be trending for couples in the near future as another way to create more personalised and customised design.

My 5-tier serves 150pax, the number of guests to be considered Micro or Intimate Wedding. For bookings now until end of 2026, a 5-tier cake is at a discounted price of RM1000, for weddings at Weil Hotel.

AI Generated Cake Sketch

Canva is my prefered app for a lot of things. The 5-tier cake base is edited from my original cake photo, and flowers generated using its AI. I have used paid cake sketching programs before, and it gererally works the same way but now you can generate a wider variety of colours and any flowers you can name.

The plus point of a cake sketch is to help clients visualise the cake and as a guide for me while doing the decorating job. Useful for creating original designs.

Conclusion

Someone recently asked me which is the most memorable cake I’ve done…wedding cake fails somehow sticks in your mind most. More important is how you save the situation, what is the lesson, what to change or improve on… and to remember, end of the day, it is just cake; sweet, soft and delicious on the inside! The perfect ending to a meal and event.
